| Leaf Collection Service Department crews provide free leaf collection service each fall. This service normally begins the third week of October and continues for six weeks until the end of November. Residents can help to provide for a more efficient pickup by doing the following:
- Leaves must be raked into the street at the curb for collection. To allow for proper drainage and most efficient pickup, it is suggested that leaves be raked out into the street approximately one foot from the curb. On narrow, two-lane streets without curbs, place leaves as close as possible to the pavement edge. Leaves up on the grass behind the curb will not be picked up.
- Leaves mixed with twigs, branches, grass, corn stalks, etc. cannot be collected.
- A schedule of leaf routes will be published and leaf collection signs will be posted in the general area as a reminder of upcoming pickup. Please observe the published and posted schedules and do not park vehicles on or near the piles to be collected. Cars parked too near the piles prevents access to the collection equipment and leaves, therefore, will not be collected. Parking on top of piles does likewise while also providing the opportunity for a hot exhaust system to set the leaves on fire with resultant damage to the vehicle.
After this time, residents must put leaves in regular bags and set out at the curb with the regular trash (please, no more than 4 bags per week).

Vandalia maintains a leaf composting area on Cassel Road, south of Cassel Hills Golf Clubhouse. Citizens are welcome to the mulch, free of charge. We just ask that you call the Vandalia Service Department, 415-2349, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to let staff know that you'll be picking some up. As time, personnel, and availability allow, the Service Department will also deliver mulch or wood chips free to your home if you need at least a small dump truck load
